Grooming

Start with the coat.

Small and medium dogs come in every kind of coat. Choose the one closest to your dog’s to see what is worth mentioning when you call.

Long and straight coats

  • Say where you see knots. Behind the ears, under the legs and along the collar are the usual places.
  • Tell the groomer how long you want the coat to be, and how much brushing you do at home.
  • Bring a photo if there is a length you like.

Wavy coats

  • Waves can hide tangles close to the skin. Mention how often you brush and which tools you use.
  • Say whether you want to keep the wave or go for something shorter and simpler to look after.
  • Tell the groomer how long it has been since the last groom.

Curly and fluffy coats

  • Dense coats tangle easily. If yours has tangles or mats, say so when you call, and where they are.
  • Ask what length is realistic to keep up between visits.
  • Describe the shape you like for the face, ears and legs.

What the groomer needs to know

Four things worth saying on the first call.

Size
Your dog’s breed or mix, rough weight and age. The Cottage focuses on small and medium dogs, so this tells you both whether your dog is a good fit.
The look
A photo does more than a description. Point to what you like, such as the length of the legs, the shape of the face or the ears, and what you would change from the last groom.
Home care
Say how often you brush and how much time you want to spend. A cut that suits your routine looks better between visits.
Extras
Nails, ears and teeth: ask what can be done during the visit and what it costs. Ask for a price when you call.

Questions

Before you book.

Is my dog the right size?

The Cottage focuses on small and medium dogs. If you are not sure which side of the line your dog falls on, call with their breed and weight.

What does grooming cost?

Call or message with your dog’s size and coat and ask for a price before you book.

Can I bring a photo of the cut I want?

Yes. A photo of a cut you like helps put it into words. Bring it with you, or ask about sending it when you call.

What if my dog’s coat is matted?

Tell the groomer when you call. Say where the mats are and how long it has been since the last groom, then ask what that means for the cut.
